生於臺灣。文化大學英文系畢業、美國愛荷華大學(The University of Iowa)英文系「作家工作室」(The Iowa Writers’ Workshop)藝術碩士(M.F.A.)、德州大學奧斯汀校區(The University of Texas at Austin)比較文學博士。曾任國立高雄科技大學應用英語系主任、口筆譯研究所所長和語言教學中心主任。退休教授。

Born in Taiwan in 1955, Ruey-shan Chen obtained a bachelor’s degree in English from Chinese Culture University in Taipei. He attended the Iowa Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa and graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1985. In 1986, he was awarded the Excellent Younger Poets prize of the Republic of China (Taiwan). In 1996, he earned a doctorate in Comparative Literature from the University of Texas at Austin.

Chen taught courses in creative writing, literature, and translation at National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology, and was chair of the Department of English and director of the M.A. Program in Interpreting and Translation. Chen is a retired professor.

Himself a poet, Chen’s recent works include Driving Solo across America in 937 Miles, published by Bookman Books, Ltd. in 2024, The Art of Poeticizing and the Mining of Imagery in Western and Chinese Poetry: a Manual for Modern Poetry Writing, published by P. A.C. Publishing Company in 2024, A Monologue Ensnared in History: 100 Selected Contemporary Polish Poems, published by Bookman Books, Ltd. in 2023, The Window on the Border between Life and Death, a translated poetry collection of Yu Hsien’s life-death poems published by Cayuga Lake Books in New York in 2017, and a critical essay “A New Subgenre as an Application of Translation Functional Theories: Yu Hsien’s Life-Death Poetry in Translation,” a research project sponsored by National Science and Technology Council in 2016.
