A Cultural History of the Avant-Garde in East Asia

Part of Cultural Histories of the Avant-Garde: A Companion Series
(www.brill.com/CHAG)

This companion series forms part of an ongoing, large-scale project launched by De Gruyter Brill, dedicated to uncovering the cultural history of the avant-garde in major regions of the world. The East Asia series comprises four volumes, each organized around specific decades and thematic concerns:

Vol. 1, 1880s–1920s: Imperial Modernities and Artistic Dissent
Vol. 2, 1930s–1950s: Revolution, Aesthetics, War, and Its Discontent
Vol. 3, 1960s–1980s: Cold War Experiments and Countercultural Movements
Vol. 4, 1990s–Present: Global Entanglements and the Futures of the Avant-Garde

The series foregrounds border crossings, intermedial practices, ruptures, and affinities across diverse cultural forms, including architecture, cinema, fashion, gaming, literature, music, photography, theatre, and the visual arts. It explores a wide range of themes, such as ecocriticism, ethnicity, gender, institutions, media, memory, sociopolitical movements, technology, and translation.

Comprising both case studies and overview chapters, each ranging from 4,000 to 6,000 words, the series seeks to shed new light on the avant-garde in East Asia.

Scholars at all stages of their academic careers are invited to submit proposals of up to 250 words outlining the proposed case study or overview chapter and its relevance to the selected volume.

Proposals should be submitted by email to eastasianavantgarde@gmail.com.
